The three freedoms

Time, money and mind. Most owners chase the second and lose the other two.

GCSEMindsets
Also called: time freedom, money freedom, mind freedom, why you started

A coaching framework used in accountancy advisory; no single originator.

In one paragraph

People start businesses for three freedoms: control of their time, enough money, and peace of mind. Then they build something that delivers one and destroys the rest.

Time freedom. Control over when and whether you work. Usually the original reason, and the first thing lost.

Money freedom. Enough income, and enough security that a bad month is not a crisis.

Mind freedom. Not lying awake about the business. Knowing where it stands, that the numbers are right and that nothing is quietly on fire.

The trade nobody chose deliberately

Most owners end up optimising for money alone, because it is the one that is measured. The business grows, income rises, and the owner works more hours than they ever did as an employee and sleeps worse.

That is a legitimate choice for a period. It stops being a choice when nobody has ever named it.

How to actually use it

  • Score the three out of ten today, and again for what you wanted when you started. The gap is the honest conversation.
  • Some interventions buy two at once. Good management information buys mind freedom and, by removing firefighting, time freedom as well.

Where it breaks down

  • It is a framing device, not an analysis. It clarifies what you are optimising for and does not tell you how to get there.

If you are being examined on it

Useful for questions on business aims and objectives — non-financial objectives are exactly this.
