The rubber band model

Stuck between two good options? Ask what is holding you and what is pulling you.

Also called: deciding between two good options, what is holding you

Created by Mikael Krogerus and Roman Tschäppeler.

In one paragraph

When both choices look reasonable, stop comparing their merits. Ask instead what is holding you where you are, and what is pulling you towards the other thing.

A straight comparison of two good options tends to stall, because both columns fill up and neither wins. The reframe splits the question in two.

What is holding you? Loyalty, security, a relationship, sunk cost, comfort, fear of what people will say. Often these are unspoken and, once written down, weaker than they felt.

What is pulling you? Curiosity, money, growth, meaning, escape. Naming these separates genuine attraction from simple dissatisfaction with the present.

The value is that it surfaces the emotional variables an ordinary pros-and-cons list keeps out — and those are usually what is actually deciding it.

How to actually use it

  • Write both lists in full before evaluating either. Editing while writing defeats the point.
  • Ask whether each holding force is a real obligation or a story. That distinction resolves most of these decisions on its own.

Where it breaks down

  • It clarifies rather than decides, and it works best for genuinely close calls. Where one option is plainly better, this adds nothing.
